A Marketplace Responsibility: Evangelism in the Marketplace

Recently, I had David Balestri speak at our annual Legacy Marketplace Summit as well as minister a message on Sunday at Faith Legacy Believers Church entitled Evangilism in the Marketplace. This blog is straight out of that message.

Evangelism in the marketplace is a unique and powerful way to share the love and message of Jesus Christ in everyday environments. Whether in the workplace, at school, or in your community, evangelism doesn’t have to fit a one-size-fits-all mould. Each believer can share their faith in a way that reflects their personality and context. This blog will explore the concept of marketplace evangelism, using scripture and practical examples to highlight how we can effectively share our faith in our daily lives.

Understanding Evangelism: The Biblical Foundation

Evangelism is about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and inviting others to experience the transformative power of a relationship with God. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings on evangelism, emphasizing the importance of this mission for all believers.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

These scriptures highlight the call to all believers to share their faith and to live in a way that reflects God’s love and grace.

Marketplace Evangelism: Different Approaches

1. Crusade Evangelism

Crusade evangelism involves large-scale events designed to reach many people at once, often featuring prominent evangelists. These events can have a significant impact, drawing large crowds and leading many to Christ. However, this is just one form of evangelism.

2. Street Evangelism

Street evangelism involves taking the message of Jesus directly to the streets. This approach is often dynamic and spontaneous, engaging people in public places. It’s a bold method that requires courage and a strong sense of calling.

3. Friendship Evangelism

Friendship evangelism is about building relationships and sharing faith through everyday interactions. This is often the most effective form of evangelism because it is based on genuine relationships and ongoing conversations.

4. Marketplace Evangelism

Marketplace evangelism refers to sharing your faith in the context of your everyday environment, whether it’s at work, in school, or within your community. It’s about being a light in your specific sphere of influence.

The Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard

Scripture Focus: Matthew 20:1-7

This parable illustrates the urgency and necessity of evangelism. The master of the house continually goes out to hire labourers for his vineyard, even late in the day, because the work is plentiful and the labourers are few.

The Harvest is Plentiful: There are many opportunities to share the gospel, but often, not enough people are actively engaging in evangelism.

The Laborers Are Few: Jesus emphasized the need for more workers in the harvest field. Today, we have millions of believers, but many are idle, waiting for others to take action.

Many believers feel underqualified for evangelism because they don’t see themselves as charismatic or outgoing. However, evangelism can take many forms, and it’s about letting God’s love shine through you in your unique context.

Practical Steps for Marketplace Evangelism

Reference: John 4:7-26

1. Sanity of Exchange

Start with a normal, relatable conversation. Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water (John 4:7-26). This was a natural and culturally appropriate way to begin a deeper conversation.

2. Social Intelligence

Understand who you’re speaking to and their context. Jesus knew the cultural and social background of the Samaritan woman and used this knowledge to engage her effectively. In other words, it was about rapport building.

3. Cultural Aptitude

Be aware of the cultural context and how best to communicate within it. Different cultures have different values and communication styles. Learn to communicate and connect effectively as well as using Wisdom and discernment.

4. Intentionality of Depth

Move conversations from surface-level topics to deeper, more meaningful discussions. Jesus transitioned the conversation with the Samaritan woman to discuss living water and eternal life.

5. Leadership of the Holy Spirit

Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew about the woman’s personal life through the Holy Spirit, which opened the door to a deeper conversation about her spiritual needs.

6. Revelation of the Good News

Ultimately, share the good news of Jesus Christ. The gospel is about hope, love, and redemption, and it should be shared in a way that highlights these truths.

Personal Story: Eli Stevenson

Eli Stevenson, once a criminal and drug dealer, found himself transformed through an accidental encounter with Jesus. He began to evangelize in his gym, leading many young people and even hardened criminals to Christ through genuine relationships and the power of the Holy Spirit. Not only did Eli evangelise but the favour of God landed on His Vocation whereby he was given a business and Gym’s to continue being influential in his city and making a Kingdom impact.

Conclusion

Evangelism in the marketplace is about being intentional, relational, and led by the Holy Spirit. It’s about using your unique personality and context to share the love of Jesus in a way that is authentic and impactful. Remember, evangelism is not just the job of professional pastors or evangelists—it’s a call for all believers to be a light in their world.

Pray this prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for calling us to be your witnesses in the world. Empower us with your Holy Spirit to share your love and truth with those around us. Give us courage, wisdom, and compassion as we engage in marketplace evangelism. May our lives reflect your grace and goodness, leading others to know you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
